Dogs (wolves) are social animals, they are used to living in a herd. They grow up with a sense of obedience to a leader. If they oppose or become powerless, they are removed from the herd. A dog or wolf alone cannot live for long, because they are not as successful at hunting alone as felines. Therefore, a domesticated dog sees its owner as a pack leader. If you treat him harshly, he will not oppose it and will remain loyal. Besides, if you starve him, he’ll leave you eventually. The instinct for life will tell him to leave the herd. In fact, the whole thing depends on a simple feeding mechanism.

The main reason why dogs are considered very loyal is that we can train them easily. You can train a dog to eat only from your hands. As long as he feels your presence around him, he will not eat the food that someone else gives him, even if he is starving. This is actually a manipulated version of their instinct to stay loyal to the herd by humans.

We don’t know exactly when and how we domesticated dogs. According to a generally accepted theory, dogs or wolves seem to have domesticated themselves. The most likely result is that they realize that there is an abundance of food near human settlements and prefer to eat them rather than hunt, and people benefit from this situation over time.
